Composition and application range of FR4 material in PCB

What is FR-4?
FR-4 material, which is the abbreviation of glass fiber cloth, is a kind of raw material and base material of circuit board. It is the code name of the grade of flame-resistant material, which means that the resin material must be able to extinguish itself after burning. Most commonly used in PCB (Printed Circuit Board), general single-sided, double-sided and multi-layer PCB boards are made of this! Because of its high strength and flame retardancy, most circuit boards will choose FR-4 as the base material.
2. What is PCB and its composition?
PCB is the abbreviation of English Printed Circuit Board. Its Chinese name is printed circuit board, also known as printed circuit board and printed circuit board. It is an important electronic component. It is the provider of electrical connection of electronic components.
PCB starts with the most basic unit: the substrate, which consists of several layers, and each layer plays an important role in the function of the final PCB. These alternate layers include:
Substrate: This is the basic material of PCB. It makes PCB rigid.
Copper: Add a thin layer of conductive copper foil on each functional surface of PCB-on one side if single-sided PCB, and on both sides if double-sided PCB. This is the copper wiring layer.
Solder mask: The top of the copper layer is the solder mask, which gives each PCB a unique green color. It makes the copper trace inadvertently contact with other conductive materials that may cause short circuit. In other words, solder keeps everything in place. The hole in the solder layer is where solder is applied to connect the components to the circuit board. Solder layer is a key step in the successful manufacturing of PCBA, because it can prevent welding on unnecessary parts and avoid short circuit.
Screen printing: White screen printing is the last layer on PCB. This layer adds labels to PCB in the form of characters and symbols. This helps to indicate the function of each component on the board.
According to the different substrate materials of PCB, there are high frequency microwave board, metal board, aluminum board, iron board, copper board, double panel and multilayer board. The circuit is used as a tool for conduction between the original parts, and a large copper surface will be designed as a grounding and power layer in the design. The line is made at the same time as the drawing. High wiring density, small size and light weight are beneficial to miniaturization of electronic equipment.
The substrate of the board itself is made of insulating materials that are not easy to bend. The fine circuit material that can be seen on the surface is copper foil. Originally, the copper foil covered the whole board, but in the manufacturing process, part of it was etched away, and the remaining part became a net-like fine circuit.
3. Advantages and characteristics of FR-4. General single-sided, double-sided and multilayer PCB boards are made of FR-4 3. FR-4 in FR-4 stands for flame retardant, while the number 4 distinguishes this material from other materials in this category. FR-4 is a glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminate, which looks like a thin woven cloth board. The term FR-4 also represents the grade used to make these laminates. Glass fiber structure provides structural stability for the material. The glass fiber layer is covered with flame retardant epoxy resin. This brings durability and strong mechanical properties to the material. All these characteristics make FR-4 printed circuit board very popular among electronic contract manufacturers.
Its technical features are: electrical insulation, stability, good flatness, smooth surface, no pits, and standard thickness tolerance. It is suitable for products with high-performance electronic insulation requirements, such as FPC reinforcing plates, PCB drilling pads, glass fiber mesons, carbon film printed glass fiber plates of potentiometers, precision planetary gears (wafer grinding), precision test plates, insulation stays of electrical (electrical) equipment, insulation pads, transformer insulation boards, and so on.
